However, dogs can suffer from various health issues; one common concern is bloat, also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Bloat in dogs occurs when the stomach fills with gas or fluid and expands, causing it to twist or rotate. This can happen from eating too much too quickly, exercising immediately after eating or swallowing excessive air while eating or drinking. Large breed dogs with deep chests, such as Great Danes, German Shepherds and Standard Poodles are typically more susceptible to bloat.

Snakebites are on the rise

For the month of August (2013) we admitted 8 animals with snakebites. Most of these have been Eastern Browns, although we have also had a Whip snake and unfortunately, 1 Taipan fatality.

If your pet has killed the snake, make sure you bring the snake and your pet as quickly as possible to be treated. You do have approximately 3 or 4 hours, generally, before your pet will show weakness and paralysis. The treatment is 90% successful.

Remember this time of year is very festive and we all have leftovers. Please be careful with leftover ham, every year we have patients with pancreatitis from eating the fat and rind off the ham. Another regular occurrence at this time of year is heat stress. Please keep pets cool when travelling and don’t leave them unattended in cars.

Please be careful while fishing, dogs love fish bait and often get hooks caught.

Comfortis for Cats

Exciting News! We have been recommending the use of Comfortis for flea control in dogs for a couple of years now. It is a once monthly, palatable tablet that kills fleas within 3 hours of being bitten. We have had great success with it, and all members of staff use it on their dogs.

The biggest problem with flea control is the environment, and treating other pets in the house, especially the family cat. Comfortis is now registered for use in cats. The drug is the same, but the dose is different.

Paralysis ticks

With the colder weather comes paralysis tick season. These ticks are carried into our yards by native animals, which are not really affected by them. However, our dogs and cats are.

Signs of paralysis tick envenomation

Wobbly back legs/unable to get up
Retching/vomiting
Trouble breathing

What to do if you find a tick

Either remove the tick, or use metho to kill it on the animal before removing it
Keep the tick in a small container
If your animal is not affected, keep a close eye on them for the next 12–24 hours (they can continue to go downhill after you remove the tick)
If your pet is showing any of the above signs, we need to treat them ASAP
Bring the tick in to the vets with you so we can identify it
Sometimes the tick may have already fallen off by the time your pet shows signs. When the tick is removed/falls off, it leaves a ‘crater’ (large lump with a sore in the middle), this is diagnostic in deciding if your pet has paralysis tick

What treatment involves

Your pet will require hospitalisation
We will place a catheter in their vein so we can give it tick antiserum
We may need to give them a number of other drugs, including antibiotics (one of the most common and serious complications of tick paralysis is pneumonia)
Your pet may require medication for their eyes, as they may not be able to blink

Prevention

Daily searching is always the best
Advantix or Frontlline used every two weeks
Tick collars—we recommend Kiltix or Preventic brands

Parvovirus myths

1. Parvo is in the soil for 10 years – wrong

Parvo is deactivated by sunlight if contaminated items are left in direct sunlight for 24 hours. This will not be effective on blankets or soil
Parvo can be in the soil in dark and wet areas for up to 12 months. It will be less in open sunlit areas

2. I can treat Parvo at home with Sugar Water or Gatorade – wrong

While the mainstay of Parvo treatment is intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration, one of the biggest problems is the vomiting that is associated with the virus
No matter how much fluid you put in your dogs mouth, it is no good if they vomit it back up
You cannot get enough fluids or electrolytes into them orally to replace the amount of fluid dogs lose from vomiting & diarrhoea
The glucose in these products will help with energy levels—if your dog does not vomit them back up

3. I just need some antibiotics – wrong

Parvo is a virus—antibiotics do not kill viruses, they kill bacteria
We do use antibiotics in the treatment regime, but it is to prevent bacterial infections as the virus strips the lining off of the insides of your dogs intestines

4. Vitamin C will fix everything – wrong

While vitamins are important for the health of your pet, vitamin C will not fix Parvovirus

5. Vaccinations don’t work anyway – wrong

Vaccinating your pet is the best chance we have of preventing Parvovirus
Vaccinating not only helps to prevent your dog from getting Parvo, it also helps to decrease the amount of disease we see in the community. Meaning fewer dogs will be exposed to the virus, and fewer will get it full stop
You must make sure your dog has all their vaccinations
As young puppies, keep them isolated until 2 weeks after their final vaccination

6. Just throw some bleach around, that will kill it – wrong

Supermarket bleach will not kill Parvovirus, you need hospital grade
Virkon is what most vets use to kill Parvovirus, and we have it readily available
F10 is not effective against Parvo

If you suspect your dog may have Parvo, the best thing is to get them checked out early. The earlier we start treatment, the higher the chance your dog will pull through.

Heat stroke

Heat stroke, or heat stress, is not something to be taken lightly. This can be a life threatening condition and unfortunately, in our tropical climate, it is something we see too often. When your pet’s core body temperature becomes too high, it can cause massive damage and even lead to organ failure in some cases.

Signs of heat stroke

Constant & unusual rapid panting
Difficulty breathing
Restlessness & unwilling to settle
Not wanting to move or collapse
Very pale or dark red gums
Little or no urination
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Confusion
Dizziness and staggering
Muscle tremors or seizures

What to do
Heat stroke is a deadly condition which is always an emergency. Ring the clinic and let us know that you’re coming, so we can be prepared to help as soon as you arrive. Offering cool water to drink and wetting the animal with cool (not cold) water and placing in front of the fan, or air conditioning, can help to try and cool them down while you’re bringing them into the clinic.

What happens at the vet
We use cooling treatments, intravenous fluid therapy and oxygen therapy to help your pets. We also use blood tests to assess for organ damage and provide medications to help manage the results of the heat stress on your pet’s body.

Prevention
Heat stress can happen to any animal, but there are some things that increase the chances of your pet being affected.

Obesity
Animals that are obese cannot get rid of heat properly through their skin and they have more problems breathing due to the fat over their chest. Helping your pet to lose weight will benefit them in many ways, not just preventing heat stroke.

Thick or long coats
Fur is designed to keep an animal warm, it does not protect or insulate them from the heat. Clipping long haired animals during summer can really help them stay cool.

Exercise
Too much, or even a normal amount of exercise can be bad when it’s too hot. From mid-morning to early afternoon is generally the worst time to exercise your pets, stick to the cooler times of day to help avoid heatstroke.

Dehydration
To prevent dehydration, always provide your pets with at least one or two clean, fresh water sources for them to access throughout the day.

Disease or old age
Any disease that compromises your animals health makes it harder for them to deal with the heat, in particular, animals with lung or heart conditions. Also, as animals age, their bodies are not as resilient and it can take much less to effect them, so be aware of this and always provide your pets with a cool environment away from the heat.

Young animals
Young animals are not as good at regulating their body temperature and may also not have learned that sun baking is a bad idea. Keep an eye on the little ones and always provide shelter from the sun.

Animals with short noses
Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats are not able to breathe as well as animals with longer snouts and are therefore less able to get rid of heat through panting and breathing. Be aware of this and make sure to always provide them with cool fresh water, shade and don’t exercise them in the hot part of the day.

Hookworms

With the wet weather around at the moment, we have seen an increase in the amount of dogs affected by intestinal worms. In particular, hookworms are taking their toll with quite a few fatalities in young puppies.

Signs of Hookworms
The life cycle of hookworms is relatively short, meaning a puppy can start to experience the effects 1–2 weeks after infection. Signs of hookworm infestation include, weakness, depression, dull hair coats and they can be underweight with pot bellies. They can also have vomiting and pasty or bloody diarrhoea.

If left untreated, puppies can die very quickly from blood loss and anaemia. If it reaches a critical stage, puppies require a blood transfusion in hospital to recover.

Prevention
Wormers are only as good as the active ingredients and only work if given correctly. Supermarket wormers often use old ingredients, to which worms have become resistant, and they do not always have good quality control, meaning the concentration of active ingredients is not always the same. Prevention with a worming tablet or paste is much cheaper than a stay in hospital.

Worming schedule for puppies
First worming at 10 days old, then every 2 weeks until they are 3-months old.

From 3 months they should be wormed every month until 6 months.

From 6 months onwards they should be wormed every 3 months unless the medication you are using is also preventing heartworm.

Any prevention medication for heartworm should strictly be given monthly.

Chocolate toxicity

It’s Easter! For most people that means chocolate!

Unfortunately, our canine companions also like the taste of chocolate which can make them very sick and even be deadly for them.

Signs of chocolate toxicity can include the following symptoms:

Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Hyper-excitability
Tremors
Rigid muscles
Rapid breathing
Increased heart rate
Seizures
Weakness
Coma

If you know your pet has eaten chocolate in the last few hours and has not yet started to show any signs of toxicity, then it’s worth taking them to the clinic so we can induce them to vomit and hopefully clear their system of the chocolate before it causes problems.

Listed below are the approximate amounts of chocolate which can causes signs of toxicity in dogs.

Small dogs (up to 5kg)

Milk chocolate: 60–100grams
Dark chocolate: 24–40 grams
Baking chocolate: 8–13 grams

Medium dogs (5kg–20kg)

Milk chocolate: 200–300 grams
Dark chocolate: 80–120 grams
Baking chocolate: 25–40 grams

Large dogs (20kg plus)

Milk chocolate: 600 grams
Dark chocolate: 240 grams
Baking chocolate: 80 grams

Please remember that all animals react differently; for a dog with health issues, it may take much less and for a dog weighing 50kg it may take much more.

Cats are even more sensitive to chocolate than dogs, but are much less likely to eat it, so we see chocolate toxicity in cats much less often. If you think your cat has eaten chocolate, or they show the above signs, please contact the clinic .
